Skin in the Game —Tamil Nadu Version

I made a heat map showing the percentage of government school teachers in Tamil Nadu who send their kids to private schools. The data was collected by a certain Mr. T.K. Chandrasekaran and was made available by Mr. K Satyanarayan.

As you can see, a lot of districts are red indicating a very high percentage of “exit” of the public school system from the public school teachers themselves. If you remember, there was a misguided proposal a while back to mandate compulsory schooling of public officials in public schools.

It is not unreasonable to assume that public school teachers have the best information on the quality of the public schools, at least their own. In this context, their revealed preference, especially in a state which ranks high on most government services, speaks volumes about the quality of public schools.

PS: The data can be found here and the code to set up the data can be found here. The graph was made through the Gramener map tool.
